USA: Five lessons from Japan's tragedy for Oregonians

While recovery from Japan's catastrophe has scarcely begun and much more will be learned in coming months, five early lessons can point Oregon toward resilience: 1. Tsunamis are deadly, but some people in harm's way can be saved; 2. Seismic standards save lives; 3. Failures cascade and deepen the disaster; 4. Public buildings are critical after earthquakes; 5. A great earthquake isn't over when it's over, write Edward Wolf, a Portland writer and school safety advocate; Jay Rask in is an architect and former mayor of Cannon Beach; Yumei Wang is an earthquake risk engineer for the state of Oregon.
