International participants of a recent workshop in Islamabad committed possible support to Pakistan in order to draw up a comprehensive plan on disaster risk reduction (DRR), introduce early warning systems and develop community based DRR teams in the country, reports The International News.

“Losses due to natural disasters are twenty times greater (as a percentage of GDP) in the developing world than those in the industrialised countries" said Dr Daud Khan, Chairman of CHEF International.

The workshop was jointly organized by ‘Rescue 1122’, CHEF International and Kobe University, with the aim of enhancing disaster preparedness and to draw lessons from the 2005 earthquake, 2010 floods and disaster risk reduction systems in place in other disaster-prone countries.
