$16 million have been allocated by the provincial and federal governments for flood-protection work across B.C. this year following the severe risk of flooding along the Fraser River in 2007.
"We got the discussion going about how it's great to have a financial disaster fund for after a disaster has happened -- but how about directing dollars into prevention or mitigation?" said Federal Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day, on the involvement of Ottawa in flood protection.
"If you can prevent something from happening, you probably have to pay out less dollars on prevention than after it happens. So we got to work on that."
