Landslide hazard mitigation in the Hindu Kush-Himalayas
The Himalayan mountain range extend from east to west in a massive arc for about 2,500 km with a width of 230 to 350 km. The Himalaya is the highest mountain range in the workd, containing 10 of the world's 14 peaks over 8,000 masl, and more than 40 peals over 7,000 m. Hillside stability and mass movement, including landslides, are controlled by several factors, including geology, climate, and topography. In the Himalaya geology plays an important role, but the geology is also very diverse as a result of the great variation in the composition of geological materials and the framework while traversing from south to north.
