The Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded the 2005 Nobel Peace Prize to Muhammad Yunus and his Grameen Bank citing their efforts to create economic and social development from below. Lasting peace cannot be achieved unless large population groups find ways in which to break out of poverty, it said. One way to do this is through micro-financing.
