Disaster reduction programme 2001–2008: summary of lessons learned and recommendations
This document presents the results of IFRC's Disaster Reduction Programme implemented in disaster prone countries in East and Southern Africa and in South Asia, which aims were to enhance the capacities of the National Societies in disaster preparedness and risk reduction, to contribute to global learning and expertise and to use the experience gained to inform future programmes.
Two evaluations were conducted, one at the end of each of the two phases of the programme. They looked at the successes of the programme in meeting its stated objectives, the technical quality of programme interventions, the effectiveness of implementation arrangements and management, and the continuity or “sustainability” of interventions. The evaluations identified a number of lessons learned and made recommendations to improve the implementation of such programmes in the future.
