The road ahead: what next for indigenous people in the climate change negotiations?

This article provides an analysis of the outcome of the 15th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 15) and possible priorities for 2010 from the perspective of indigenous peoples in the decisions on: (i) adaptation; (ii) technology development and transfer; (iii) methodologies for reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries (REDD); (iv) capacity-building; (v) monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV); and (vi) sectoral approaches and sector-specific actions in agriculture.
It proposes five priorities to ensure that indigenous peoples and their issues are promoted and they secure adequate representation and protection in the developing climate change regime, and provides a list of references to relevant issues in the outcomes of COP 15 in the annex.
