INEE thematic brief: disaster reduction

This brief defines disaster reduction in the education sector and describes the impacts of disasters in relation to educational continuity and the safety and security of children. It also summarises the INEE minimum standards in five key areas of concern to disaster prevention in the education sector: (i) creating safe learning environments with safe location, construction and retrofit; (ii) maintaining safe learning environments with school disaster management; (iii) protecting educational access with continuity planning; (iv) teaching and learning disaster prevention and preparedness; and (v) building a culture of safety.
