Indigenous disaster early warning, preparedness, and response

This article presents examples of indigenous disaster early warning, preparedness, and response including: mitigation efforts of the Banyala community in Budalang’I, Kenya; prediction of drought and floods in Swaziland, and drought and famine in Tanzania; disaster early warning of the Nenets Autonomous Okrug and Kamchatka of the Russian Federation; tsunami risk identification of the Simeulue community, Indonesia; tsunami early warning of sea gypsies along Thailand’s southern coast and the tribal communities living on India’s Andaman and Nicobar islands; typhoon risk identification in the Saigasaki and Tano districts of Japan; flood, cyclone and storm surge preparedness among local communities in Bangladesh.
