Climate change, disaster risk, and the urban poor (brochure and case studies)
This study examines the interlinkages between climate change, disaster risk, and the urban poor, underscoring four key messages: (1) The urban poor are on the front line, particularly vulnerable to climate change and natural hazards. Exposure to risk is exacerbated by overcrowding living conditions, lack of adequate infrastructure and services. (2) City governments are the drivers for addressing risks through ensuring basic services. (3) City officials build resilience by mainstreaming risk reduction into urban management. (4) Significant financial support is needed.
The study was prepared for The Mayor’s Task Force on Climate Change, Disaster Risk and the Urban Poor, an initiative launched by World Bank Group President Robert B. Zoellick and the mayors of Dar es Salaam, Jakarta, Mexico City, and Sao Paulo at the 2009 UN Climate Summit in Copenhagen.
