Rio+20 and disaster risk reduction
This fact sheet introduces disaster readiness, including disaster risk reduction, as one of the key priority themes to be discussed by world leaders in June 2012 in Brazil for the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20). It presents: (i) what disaster risk reduction is; (ii) why disaster risk reduction is important, describing its inextricable link with sustainable development; (iii) what Australia is doing about disaster risk reduction, its financial contribution as well as its consistent approach to prevention and mitigation through such measures as building codes, risk modelling and mapping, early warning systems, education and so on; and (iv) further information on the Australian government activities in the domain.
