Focus on Mozambique: a decade of experimenting disaster risk reduction strategies
This report describes the environmental setting of Mozambique and the work of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT) there. The report is divided into six sections: (i) section one explains Mozambique's environmental system of Mozambique and its main natural hazards (cyclones, flooding, and drought); (ii) section two describes the disaster risk reduction (DRR) actives undertaken by UN-HABITAT and visually compares the locations of their activities with the locations of the areas which are the highest prone to disaster; (iii) section three maps the risks present in specific coastal areas of Mozambique; (iv) section four presents technical solutions and materials for structural safety to cope with each of the three disaster types; (v) section five discusses how to effectively incorporate communities in disaster risk reduction and outlines six stages of participatory planning; (vi) section six gives eight examples of disaster resilient projects and structures implemented in Mozambique.
