Disability inclusive disaster risk reduction: addressing the need of one tenth population of Bangladesh
As a contribution to the International day for disaster reduction 2013, this paper discusses the policy implications of including people with disability representatives in the local level disaster management committees (DMC) in Bangladesh in order to ensure that their requirements are considered in risk reduction and preparedness planning. In this paper, Islamic Relief Bangladesh also presents the story of Toyen, a former shopkeeper who was forced to have his left leg amputated and who now leads a group of other villages teaching them about disasters and how they can keep themselves and their family safe, as a case study.
