Disaster risk reduction: community toilets
This paper reports on an IFRC project to plan and construct public toilets that address sanitation issues in Dhanora, an Indian village. The construction of public toilets has reduced community risk and engaged the community under local 'panshayat' government leadership. Due to the constant risk of flooding, Dhanora has been listed for rehabilitation by the government for 47 years, however this work is yet to be completed. The community remains at high risk of flooding and water borne diseases due to non-availability of potable water and improper sanitation, as well as other development issues.
