Introduction to the proposal of the Open Working Group for Sustainable Development Goals
This document proposes a set of sustainable development goals (SDGs) for consideration and appropriate action by the General Assembly at its 68th session. It contains several targets related to disaster risk reduction in: proposed goal 1, 'End poverty in all its forms everywhere'; Proposed goal 2, 'End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture'; proposed goal 11, 'Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable'; and proposed goal 13, 'Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts'.
The proposed goal 11 specifically considers the development and implementation of integrated policies and plans towards inclusion, resource efficiency, mitigation and adaptation to climate change, resilience to disasters, in line with the forthcoming Hyogo Framework holistic disaster risk management at all levels.
These goals constitute an integrated, indivisible set of global priorities for sustainable development. The proposed goals are accompanied by targets and will be further elaborated through indicators focused on measurable outcomes. The goals and targets integrate economic, social and environmental aspects and recognize their interlinkages in achieving sustainable development in all its dimensions.
