Building disaster resilient societies: JICA's cooperation in disaster management
This policy document presents JICA’s international cooperation programmes and engagements with developing countries specifically aimed at making them more disaster resilience, and includes examples. It outlines how JICA is enhancing the capacity to cope with disasters according to its development strategy goals: i) prevention phase, development of disaster-resilient communities and societies; ii) response phase, quick and effective delivery of emergency assistance to victims; iii) recovery and reconstruction phase, smooth transition to and implementation of recovery and reconstruction. It further includes an information graphic on JICA's assistance for disaster management (FY 1997-2006).
It includes country specific capacity development projects: capacity development in disaster, management in the kingdom of Thailand; project on capacity development for disaster risk management in central America "BOSAI"; dissemination of construction technology for low-cost and seismic resistant houses in the republic of Peru, the study on the integrated watershed management for the Nyando River Basin in the republic of Kenya; the development study on rehabilitation and reconstruction in Muzaffarabad city in Islamic Republic of Pakistan; Disaster Reduction Learning Center (DRLC): a hub for human resources development in disaster management in Japan.
