Enabling knowledge for disaster risk reduction in integration to climate change adaptation - Deliverable 2.2.
Deliverable 2.2. Mapping exchange of knowledge to support DRR
This report presents a map of the exchange of knowledge to support disaster risk reduction (DRR). It is based on the findings of 11 case studies provided by the partners of the project “Enabling knowledge for disaster risk reduction in integration to climate change adaptation” (KNOW-4-DRR).
The study notes that there are major efforts made to reduce risks and to prepare for identified risks and hazards. Post disaster assessments lead to lessons learnt and then to improvements in institutional structures, systems and warnings. However it is clear from the studies that the exchange of knowledge for DRR is problematic and whilst data and information islargely available and constantly getting better, communicating thisinformation to households, civil society and the private sector is not easy.
More needs to be done to generate a culture of DRR thinking and an exchange of knowledge across society. The case studies suggest that this is a major challenge. Within this, social medai provides important opportunities, but places the onus on individuals, which is in turn a second challenges, in particular to develop and maintain awareness over time for action on DRR.
The report is one of the deliverables of the KNOW-4-DRR project. Its aims are to analyse, assess and understand how knowledge about disaster risk reduction and adaptation to climate change is actually produced, managed and shared, and ultimately made use of – or indeed not used – by scientists, practitioners, decision makers, and by educational and civil society actors.
