Countering the Zika epidemic in Latin America
This study discusses dynamics and drivers of the Zika epidemic in Latin America in order to assess longer-term risks and prioritise interventions. The transmissibility of the infection, the generation time and large-scale connectivity of human populations are the three key factors that determine the scale and speed of spread of an emerging infection.
The authors suggest policy-makers to:
- tune pregnancy delays to the local context; and
- increase the effectiveness of vector control.
