Global Report on Internal Displacement (2018)

This year’s Global Report on Internal Displacement (GRID) explores why so many countries still struggle despite 20 years of international, regional and national policy efforts and investments. Two decades of investment in improving the lives of internally displaced people (IDPs) have not produced solutions for the majority of them. Progress in policy development has been made, but this report shows that normative aspirations must be matched with implementation and tangible progress.

This report lays out a common path ahead. Internal displacement is central to the three core UN functions: ensuring peace and security, promoting sustainable development and protecting human rights. The international community has become better at coordinating its response to the phenomenon, but this must now be accompanied by investments in preventive action.

Part 1 of the report features new global figures for the year of 2017, displacement highlights and regional overviews. Part 2 discusses policy progress, risk and impacts, and the way forward for reducing internal displacement. Part 3 highlights data challenges and gaps in accounting for internal displacement.
