Building resilience to climate change through social protection: Lessons from MGNREGS, India
The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) is India’s flagship social protection programme. Through four state case studies, this paper examines how MGNREGS builds and strengthens resilience to various climate shocks. The paper also explores how integrating climate risk management into the provision of social protection, and convergence with broader risk management interventions can address poverty and climate risks. Finally, the authors identify options for Indian and global policymakers for integrating climate risk management into their social protection policies.
