Pathways for advancing integrative disaster risk and resilience management in Iran: Needs, challenges and opportunities
Disaster Risk Management and Governance in Iran, this article finds, is facing very similar challenges as many other regions in the world. For instance, the gap between knowing and acting is hampered by risk awareness but also risk information distribution – and this can be found amongst lay citizens as well as between institutions and authorities. Two main areas for advancement have been presented in this article: disaster risk management and governance and risk assessments.
The article indicates matches of local needs with international agendas and monitoring processes such as the Sendai Framework, New Urban Agenda or Sustainable Development Goals. Pathways for future work acknowledging agenda alignment of these international processes were found to include cross-sectoral and interdisciplinary research on advancing risk-informed decision making, including resilience assessments, critical infrastructure and inter-urban interdependencies in a fast-growing metropolitan area. This paper stresses the pathway of integrating urban planning with disaster risk management and critical infrastructure.
