Under the general supervision of the Chief, Global Information and Early Warning Service and the direct supervision of the Senior Economist, Africa, Near East and Asia Group, will be responsible for the planning and preparation of analytical appraisals of current and prospective food security situations in assigned countries.
In particular, the incumbent will:
Monitor developments in crop production and the food supply and demand situation in assigned countries; enhance the gathering and dissemination of basic information at country and regional levels; prepare technical inputs for Global Information and Early Warning System for Food and Agriculture (GIEWS) regular reports: “Crop Prospects and Food Situation, Food Outlook”, as well as Special Alerts and Reports; establish and/or strengthen a reporting system on food and agriculture for each country monitored; maintain and update on a regular basis supply/demand balances for major foods for each country monitored; organize, participate in or lead Crop and Food Supply Assessment Missions and in special ad-hoc missions in the event of food emergency situations; analyze incoming reports on crop and food outlook, statistical data, food aid, prices and satellite imagery to keep abreast of developments that are likely to impact negatively on food security; undertake analytical studies relevant to vulnerability and early warning in assigned countries; participate in the development and updating of GIEWS food supply/demand and vulnerability assessment methodology; maintain close contacts with relevant FAO units, FAO Representations, relevant national and international institutions and NGOs;
perform other related duties as required.
Advanced University Degree in Economics or Agricultural Economics
Seven years of relevant experience in economic analysis relevant to food security and vulnerability. Working knowledge of English or French and a limited knowledge of the other one
