Context

The Centre for Research on the Epidemiology of Disasters (CRED) is a research centre based in Université catholique de Louvain (UCL), Faculty of Public Health and Institute of Health and Society (IRSS), Belgium. CRED promotes research, training, and information dissemination on disasters, with a special focus on public health, epidemiology, structural and socio-economic aspects.

Summary

CRED is looking for a fulltime researcher within the context of its natural disasters research projects. The research officer will be part of a team working on disasters, development and climate issues within an international context. The main functions of this post will involve statistical analyses and geo-referencing of natural disaster data, as well as creation of maps and writing scientific papers using geospatial analyses. The candidate will use demographic, statistical, econometric or epidemiologic methods, as well as GIS software. Participation in writing research papers and analytical reports will be an important component of this job, along with responding to data inquiries and assisting in projects reports and workshops.

Key responsibilities

- Producing in-depth analysis of health in disaster situations based on multiple sources
- Geo-referencing EM-DAT disasters and their impacts using new methods and datasets
- Creating maps and performing spatial analyses
- Writing research papers using GIS technologies and natural disaster data
- Plan and present research findings at conferences, meetings and training courses
- Other research and technical tasks as assigned by CRED’s director

Minimum job requirements

- Master’s level Degree in Geography, Environment, Physical Sciences, Development, Epidemiology, Public Health or related fields (with 2 or 3 years experiences)
- Strong skills in data analysis and statistics tools as well as ArcGIS
- Good computer skills (Word, Excel, Access, Power Point, etc ....)
- Interest in development and humanitarian issues
- Ability to make presentations in front of external audiences
- Ability to travel and work within a multi-cultural context
- Must be an independent worker and have excellent interpersonal skills.
- Fluent English and French are prerequisites for this position.
