Poor and vulnerable communities across Central America rely heavily on the production of coffee to make a living. So needless to say, as climate change causes coffee rust to strike their crops, general well-being is hugely affected. Oxfam is working hard to fight their cause – rolling out agricultural development projects that aim to improve livelihoods and food security for local producers. Coordinating these projects will help to make the biggest impact possible.

The role

In this complex multi-level, multi-country and multi-affiliate role, the project coordinator will manage three in-country teams as they deliver humanitarian programmes across Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. The challenge here is to support and respond to the issue of coffee rust that’s affecting the livelihoods of the vulnerable communities in Central America. So taking full responsibility for implementing, monitoring and evaluating the programmes, the project coordinator will recruit and manage the teams to ensure a consistent intervention, both technically and strategically. The project coordinator will oversee everything from hands-on action and research work, right the way through to high-level advocacy and relationship building with national services, the UN agencies and other NGOs. And monitoring our ongoing performance in all aspects of the programme, the project coordinator will deliver solutions that will really make a difference.

Applicant profile

To rise to this challenge, the project coordinator will need a degree in food security or agriculture, and experience coordinating international technical cooperation and livelihood programmes in a fast-paced, international environment. A clear understanding of gender equality and diversity issues in a humanitarian context is vital. As is knowledge of the political and economic context of Central America. And because the project coordinator will be dealing with a wide range of stakeholders – not to mention leading, motivating and supporting teams – networking, influencing and people management skills must be second to none, both in Spanish and English. Expert judgement, and strong influencing and communication skills; Oxfam will expect the project coordinator to exercise all of them in a range of cultures and working environments.

Thousands of people already commit their time and talents to our campaigning, humanitarian and long-term development projects. Now we’re looking for yours.
