System analyst: earthquake and tsunami systems

The System Analyst, reporting to the Team Leader – Systems Research and Development, provides computing support to the regional facility for the evaluation of tsunami risk and provision of timely tsunami watch messages to National Tsunami Warning Centers (NTWCs) in RIMES Member States, including maintenance of tsunami database, decision support systems, and computer-based tools; is part of an earthquake and tsunami investigation team that serves watch duty on rotational basis; supports system development; and develops and maintains the RIMES webpage.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Knowledge: Master’s degree in technology, specialized in computer science/ engineering
- Experience: At least 2 years experience in mainframe computing servers; experience in hardware and software of the Unix environment; experience in computer networking and security; experience in Unix/ Linux operating systems and system programming.
- Skills and Abilities: Good programming skills and experience in Fortran, C+, and shell scripts; demonstrated ability to plan and organize application work independently; excellent English proficiency in communication, presentation, and report writing.
- Personal Qualities: Willingness to be on standby duty in addition to the regular 40-hour work week; excellent interpersonal skills; team-oriented work style; interest and experience in working in a multi-cultural environment; willingness and availability to travel, strong desire to learn and undertake new challenges; willingness to work hard; has good sense of humor and fun, but with seriousness about the quality and excellence of work.
