Save the Children is the world’s independent children’s charity. We have made enormous progress for children in the last few years and have ambitious targets to build on this momentum.

Save the Children has recently started to develop a UK Emergencies programme, because we know that emergencies affect those living in poverty the most and that children are especially vulnerable. Therefore, we are looking for a UK Emergencies Consultant to carry out a vital piece of work (either homebased or from our Farringdon offices). The overall aim of this work is to reduce the impact of emergencies and traumatic events on children, particularly those living in poverty.

About the Role

A key part of the UK Emergencies programme is how we can support children and families living in poverty to reduce risks in their communities and be prepared for emergencies. Children’s participation forms a critical part of this work.

We are contracting an external consultant to review the existing provision of child focussed preparedness/ risk reduction initiatives in the UK, identify gaps in provision and determine where Save the Children UK could add value to or complement existing initiatives.

Requirements for the Role

  • Knowledge and awareness of the UK emergency sector and disaster risk reduction programming particularly relating to children
  • An understanding of the mechanisms and approaches of participation involving children
  • The ability to find, review, critically assess and analyse information
  • Excellent communication skills
  • A proven track record in research, ideally involving disaster risk reduction and/or emergency preparedness
  • A record of producing quality, evidenced reports to an agreed deadline
