Purpose & Responsibilities

Position Type: Paid Internship (6 June 2016 – 6 September 2016)

Currently, AGU has an excellent internship opportunity in our dynamic Science Department. The Thriving Earth Exchange (TEX) is a new program of the American Geophysical Union (AGU) that connects scientists and community leaders and helps them work together to use Earth and space science to solve pressing local priorities related to climate change or natural hazards.

The community science intern will support TEX staff in matching scientists and communities and help TEX execute its marketing and engagement plan, especially outreach to AGU members. This will benefit the mission of AGU by helping develop a portfolio of TEX projects that leverage Earth and space science (ESS) and engage AGU members for the benefit of humanity. TEX’s budget for 2015 includes funding for an intern year round.

The intern will help the team advance new and existing TEX partnerships. The intern will assist the Program Manager by performing background research on new projects and identifying relevant Earth and/or space science experts so that they may be interviewed for individual projects. Moreover, the intern will be responsible for TEX social media scheduling and assembling a bi-monthly TEX newsletter.

The community science intern will be responsible for assisting the TEX team in identifying scientists with relevant expertise and experience to work with communities. She/he will also be responsible for all TEX social media efforts and a bi-monthly e-newsletter. The summer community science intern will also support logistics and planning of TEX sessions and events at the AGU Fall Meeting 2016, and assist with other tasks, as necessary. In addition to these tasks, the intern will be asked to create and lead a project that advances TEX’s services or mission and aligns with their long-term career goals.

  • Well-organized and skilled at prioritizing and managing multiple tasks

The successful candidate for this internship will be subject to a pre-employment background check. AGU proudly offers a casual work environment, excellent compensation, generous work-life opportunities, and an outstanding benefits package.
