The British Red Cross are currently looking for a Disaster Management Coordinator (DMC) for the West & Central Africa and Overseas Branches region. He/she will be responsible for developing, coordinating and advising on BRC and Movement partners' disaster management activities within the region.

This is a very exciting opportunity within a dynamic team that is currently developing a number of new projects in partnership with African host National Societies and in collaboration with other Red Cross/Red Crescent Movement actors. Additionally the DMC contributes to managing the existing regional portfolio and will be the lead on implementing responses to emergencies and disasters occurring in the region with support from the Emergencies team. Due to the regional context they will have the opportunity to work very closely with the East and Southern Africa team, particularly on epidemics responses in Sub-Saharan Africa and on the IFRC's global disaster response tools.

The DMC is the primary focal point of contact within the region regarding disaster management expertise and his/her role consists of developing and maintaining relationships with other agencies, institutions and movement actors to ensure that BRC's approach is informed and innovative.

The role will be based at the UK Head Office in London with extensive travel to the region. Due to this we require someone with a high working proficiency of both English and French. He/she will also have a strong knowledge of security management and the humanitarian and political situation in the West & Central Africa region. The successful candidate will have experience managing projects according to project cycle management and will be familiar with concept note and project proposal drafting as well as developing logframes. He/she will have experience implementing emergency responses and will have been previously exposed to overseas work in challenging contexts.

Additional key experiences or skills required:

  • Experience in assessing needs, planning and delivering emergency response programmes
  • Experience in budgeting and developing funding proposals
  • Knowledge and experience advising on disaster management, resilience and recovery
