Background

The University of Manchester Humanitarian and Conflict Response Institute (HCRI) is a multidisciplinary centre bringing together existing expertise from the Faculty of Humanities (including social sciences) and the Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health, and offers a flexible approach to the provision of research and taught programmes so as to cater to the current needs of the aid industry as well as prepare the next generation of crisis response researchers and practitioners.

Job Description

This lectureship is a teaching and research position. The post is intended to provide high-quality teaching in the Institute, where the curriculum emphasises research-informed teaching processes. Therefore, experience in curriculum design, postgraduate and undergraduate teaching are essential.

The role will include being Programme Director for the established on campus MSc International Disaster Management programme, and Programme Director of the new online MSc in Disaster Management: Resilience, Response and Relief which is a joint programme with The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. These programmes will be delivered either online or via blended learning resources utilising Blackboard, the University’s virtual learning environment. This post will ensure that the use of eLearning on these programmes is exemplary and work with the Faculty eLearning team to ensure that HCRI provides an innovative, collaborative and engaging online student experience. In addition, the successful candidate may be asked to contribute to other teaching activities as stipulated by the Institute Director.

The successful candidate will be expected to be responsible for ensuring course recruitment targets are met by contributing to the programme marketing plans and supporting recruitment operational activities in conjunction with HCRI Directors and Manager and relevant School and Faculty departments.

Teaching commitments will likely include (but are not limited to) convening or contributing to the following modules:

  • Disaster Management – Theory and Application
  • Introduction to Disaster Management
  • Risk, Vulnerability and Resilience
  • Research Methods

Candidates might have the option to design an additional module around their own research interests.

Qualifications

Applicants must have a PhD in a relevant discipline and have a record of, or potential to produce, publications in internationally recognised outlets. Their research should connect with any aspect of disaster management. Relevant areas of research could include: disaster management planning, prevention, mitigation, preparedness and resilience, logistics, capacity building, humanitarian intervention, emergency medical services and systems, community and public participation, and models for disaster response coordination. Experience in supervising PhD students in any of the above areas is highly desirable. A track record in securing research funding, and working on collaborative and international research is desirable.

Quantitative research skills are not essential but would be appreciated.
