Practical Action recognizes that Climate Change is affecting the lives of poor people right around the world. Our strategy commits us to “helping people find solutions to some of the world’s toughest problems – made worse by catastrophic climate change and persistent gender inequality”. We need to understand the impacts of climate change in all our areas of work, build resilience into our on-going programmes, and take messages and learning from our work into our national and global advocacy efforts.
Our work on ‘Cities fit for people’ focuses on improving the lives of slum dwellers and informal workers in WASH and solid waste management. By working with communities and local authorities on access to basic services, we help empower slum dwellers to have greater access to decision-makers. This is the area of Practical Action’s work that has so far done least to embed understanding and action on climate resilience.
The aims of this literature review and scoping study are (1) to document the most significant climate change threats to urban slum and low-income communities in three focal countries, elaborating, in particular, those that relate to WASH and solid waste management services; and (2) explore the extent to which climate resilience is being built into policies and programmes for urban WASH or solid waste management at local and national levels.
