Training course on 'Seismology, seismic hazard and tsunami early warning'
As a follow-up to requests made on the occasion of the Climate Dialogue meeting with island states from the Pacific region, the GFZ is offering, with the financial support of the Federal Foreign Office of the Federal Republic of Germany a special course on “Seismology, Seismic Hazard and Tsunami Early Warning” in Fiji.
This training course is customized to the demands of experts from institutions of the Western Pacific Region (Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Palau, Samoa, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea, Nauru, Solomon Islands) responsible for Seismic Information and Tsunami Early Warning with function as “Officer on Duty”.
A team of lecturers from the GFZ is supported by lecturers from the region. The focus of lectures and computer supported training will be on:
• seismology, (wave propagation, earthquake location, magnitude determination)
• robust methods in seismic data processing and computer aided (automatic) seismogram analysis
• rupture modelling and tsunami generation
• tsunami wave propagation and tsunami modelling, verification and detection
• GPS methods used in rupture determination and tsunami verification
• Seismic Hazard and Tsunami Hazard Assessment
Besides introducing state of the art technologies and scientific applications the course seeks to foster to co-operation between the participants from youth-western Pacific countries and their institutions in the field of real-time seismology and tsunami early warning.
