The Swiss Seismological Service (SED) at ETH Zurich will highlight in a public lecture, the recent earthquake disaster in Japan and New Zealand, from the perspective of seismology.

Due to the catastrophic quake and subsequent tsunami off the coast of Japan on 11 March and the events in Christchurch New Zealand, in February 2011 earthquakes and their consequences for our society moved back into the public eye. Despite the intensive coverage of recent days the need for answers to the How and Why of the earthquake are still large.

Prof. Domenico Giardini, director of the Swiss Seismological Service, and his colleagues report on the state of scientific knowledge on the earthquake, its seismic consequences and what can we learn from it especially for Switzerland.
