The purpose of the workshop is to examine topics that the Council or Western Governors' Association may wish to emphasize in potential congressional reauthorization of NIDIS. For example, seasonal to inter-annual drought prediction capability is a high priority for Western water managers, and a subject presently lacking a focused federal research effort. The impacts of this summer's unexpected severe drought in the Midwest highlight how valuable predictive capability would have been.
