Climate risk insurance and integrated climate risk management: Developing a strategic concept for implementation
Experts will critically examine how insurance can be one integral part of a comprehensive climate risk management strategy by gathering lessons learned and good practices from experts in the field. These outputs will be used to develop a strategic approach intended to better assist climate negotiators and give added political momentum in working out a set of options on how to implement climate risk insurance solutions in an integrated risk management approach.
Objectives
- Collect and distil lessons learned and good practices from experts’ experience in the fields of weather risk insurance, disaster risk reduction and adaptation to create a stronger evidence base on how insurance can be used as a tool for reducing climate risks.
- Examine the necessary elements (potential and existing) and enabling policy environments necessary to allow insurance to play a complementary role in managing climate-related risks in the context of developing countries and emerging economies.
- Better assist climate negotiators and give added political momentum in working out a set of options on implementing climate risk insurance solutions in an integrated risk management approach in the light of upcoming important policy making milestones in international climate change debates in 2015.
