A workshop on the role of Information, Education and Communication (IEC) in Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation will be conducted by the Climate Change Commission (CCC), through Project Climate Twin Phoenix, in partnership with the provincial government of Davao Oriental and the central and regional offices of the Mines and Geosciences Bureau.

Highly trained geologists and technical personnel from the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) of the Central and Regional Offices will be conducting the first phase of the workshop which shall take place for the following municipalities on these specific dates: Cateel, December 11; Boston, December 12; and Baganga, December 13.

During the workshop, technical experts from MGB will be using actual data gathered from geohazard assessments and comprehensive mapping conducted in the municipalities of Cateel, Boston, and Baganga, which are among the areas worst hit by Typhoon Pablo in 2012. MGB conducted extensive assessment of the areas to determine the risk of flooding and landslides in particular sites and be used as guide by local governments in their land use planning especially in determining safe zones and relocation areas.

Participants who will be local officials and public elementary and secondary teachers will have the opportunity to learn first-hand how to appreciate and use the geohazard maps to identify the critical areas which are susceptible to landslide, flood and coastal geohazards.

The IEC activity is a component in the capacity building programs of Project Climate Twin Phoenix. Project Climate Twin Phoenix is implemented by the CCC and with support and technical assistance from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Australian Government, to put in place a long term capacity development program for cities and municipalities by addressing disaster risks from climate change and other related natural hazards.
