India: Gujarat earthquake 2001

After nearly 14,000 lives were lost, some 160,000 people were injured, and over a million homes were damaged or destroyed in the 2001 earthquake, Gujarat became one of the first states in the country to work proactively towards disaster management. Fifteen years later, mock drills are part of the regular regimen to promote earthquake safety in all schools.
