Description

The Institute for International Law of Peace and Armed Conflict (IFHV) invites you to the free online seminar “The Use of Geoinformation in (Anticipatory) Humanitarian Action”. The training will take place from 17 to 28 January 2022 on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 9 am to 1 pm each day. The use of geodata in humanitarian action holds great potential, for example in the context of thorough risk analysis. Against this background, the analysis of geodata has also become a core component of anticipatory humanitarian approaches.

In this course, participants will get an overview of existing data sources, including user-generated data such as OpenStreetMap. They will learn how to use this data systematically, with a particular focus on the use of geospatial data in the context of risk analysis in order to provide needs-based and anticipatory humanitarian assistance. Within this module, participants will also learn the basics of using the open-source software QGIS.

The training is facilitated jointly by the German Red Cross, the Red Cross / Red Crescent Climate Centre and the Heidelberg Institute for Geoinformation Technology. Since 2017, both institutions have worked successfully together to further refine the methodology of anticipatory approaches like Forecast-based Financing and to develop GIS solutions for the implementation of (anticipatory) humanitarian action.

The course is conducted under the umbrella of the academy for humanitarian action (aha). It can be credited for a Certificate of Advanced Studies in the field of “Anticipatory Humanitarian Action” and course is aimed at staff of humanitarian NGOs with experience on (anticipatory) humanitarian action as well as participants of the previous trainings on anticipatory action at the aha.
