Purpose and Objectives

The Geospatial Information Department of ADPC is to increase use of geospatial technology, data, and information by countries in Asia for supporting decision-making related to disaster risk management and climate resilience. The department supports all thematic areas of focus of ADPC to achieve their goals, mainly through:

  • Increased accessibility and technical capacity to develop, maintain, and use geospatial information including disaster and climate risk maps, forecasted and real-time disaster data for early warning, and damage data for post-disaster assessment and recovery planning, 
  • Increased awareness by decision-makers on applications of geospatial information in disaster risk management and climate resilience decision making, and
  • Geospatial solutions, such as maps, tools, models, and data, customized to the demands of stakeholders

Geospatial Information Department is also the host institution for SERVIR-Mekong, the regional hub of the global SERVIR program, a partnership program of the United States Agency for International Development’s (USAID) and NASA (the United States’ National Aeronautics and Space Administration) that aims to enhance climate change adaptation and environmental management in the Lower Mekong sub-region through increase applications of geospatial information in policy formulation, planning, and other decision-making contexts.

Therefore, we are seeking an intern to support the SERVIR-Mekong team on data processing, develop a machine learning model for land cover and land use mapping in countries of the Mekong region. Co-develop documentations and support organizing GIS and Remote Sensing training that SERVIR-Mekong will conduct in the Mekong region in the time indicated.

Expected Outputs

  • Time-series land cover map for 2019 – 2021 updated
  • Crop types mapping for Myanmar (Rice and Maize)
  • Training data set for land cover map
  • Updated the RLCMS user manual for the land cover portal of the SERVIR-Mekong

Responsibilities and Tasks

The intern will support the following tasks;

  1. Update regional land cover map and SERVIR-Mekong Land cover portal
  • Learning and working on data processing in RLCMS
  • Support to process data to update Time series of the regional land cover map (2019, 2020)
  • Develop machine learning model for crop type mapping
  • Working with Collect Earth Online to collect data for validation
  • Support to develop documentation of RLCMS user manual
  1. Google Earth Engine training and other online training
  • Support giving lectures on GEE and leading exercises
  • Help prepare training material
  • Support preparation material for coming workshops, training.

Working Principles

  • Work under the supervision of the Land use, Land cover (LULC) and Ecosystem lead and technically guided by the Landcover team under the Geospatial information Department
  • Work closely with the GEO team members and other team members of ADPC

Qualifications

  • Background in Geosciences, environmental management, agriculture development or related
  • Fluent English writing and communications skills
  • Good programming skills include Google Earth Engine
  • Enthusiastic for research and a good collaborator

Duty Station:  Remotely or in head office in Bangkok as discussion

Duration:  6-months internship
