Job description:

Vulnerable individuals and micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) in emerging and developing countries often lack financial protection against the consequences of illness, death of family members, accidents, crop failures or disasters. Insurance as a financial coping mechanism is not readily accessible to low-income households. However, if vulnerable individuals and MSMEs are provided with access to insurance, it can prevent them from slipping (deeper) into poverty in an event of a shock. Need-based insurance can also lead to more productive economic activity, as risks are better managed. The Sector Programme (SP) "Risk Finance and Insurance" and "Climate" is embedded in the department of "Economic and Social Development, Digitalisation" and works on creating or improving access to insurance in developing and emerging countries. The SP advises the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), positions the topic of insurance at international events, produces publications and pilots new concepts. In doing so, the SP deals with a wide range of topics in the field of insurance like customer protection, gender, food security, climate change, MSMEs, forced displacement & migration, digitalization, and the use of innovative technologies such as remote sensing, blockchain, and artificial intelligence. As part of financial system development, the SP also contributes significantly to the achievement of global agendas such as the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (SDGs), the Paris Agreement, and the G20 Global Partnership for Financial Inclusion. The ongoing pandemic has led to frequent work outside the office, therefore, flexibility to work in Eschborn or Bonn is offered.

Your tasks:

As one of the focal points of your internship at the sector project "Global Initiative for Access to Insurance" and "Climate", you will support the piloting of new concepts. Concretely, you will take responsibility for defined work packages, which you will conduct independently after prior guidance. This includes the following tasks, among others:

  • Contributions to conceptual work on the topic of "risk finance, climate risk insurance and risk assessment" and support of the team through independent research work
  • Operational support of implementation activities in partner countries
  • Support for the initiation of new projects that are designed for cooperation with the private sector
  • Preparation of presentation materials and concept papers on various topics related to inclusive insurance and/or risk management
  • Support the team in knowledge management, e.g. reviewing implementation experiences
  • Participation in meetings of the team and other areas of GIZ
  • Support in the processing of requests from the BMZ

Your profile:

  • You are studying in the third semester or higher, and bring the following with you, among other things:
  • Enthusiasm for tasks in the implementation of insurance solutions in particular, but also of financial solutions beyond that for poor and vulnerable people in emerging and developing countries
  • Enthusiasm for the use of technologies such as satellites, blockchain or artificial intelligence in the implementation of the aforementioned financial solutions
  • Good analytical skills as well as competence to quickly familiarize oneself with new issues and to present them in a structured as well as intuitively understandable way
  • Proven problem-solving skills and ability to work on tasks largely independently
  • Enjoy teamwork, good communication skills and a strong sense of self-initiative
  • Very good English and ideally good written and spoken German. Knowledge of French is an advantage
