About

What is disaster law and how does it help us reduce risk from the consequences of natural hazard events?

Despite the fact that the term ‘law’ is used in common discourse on a daily basis, it is a term that few outside legal academia really consider in any detail. For this reason it is often misunderstood and equated in only with courts and perhaps Parliament. In fact the nature of law means that it is at the heart of any society. As a result, law underpins all aspects of disaster risk reduction, forming the often-invisible foundation of disaster risk reduction, protecting and preparing communities. Law is therefore key to preventing, responding to and recovering from the consequences of natural hazards.

In this webinar, members of the University of Canterbury’s Institute of Law, Emergencies and Disasters (LEAD) explore the links between law, governance, resilience and disasters. The webinar will particularly focus on recent work examining the gender impacts of disasters and the problematic legal framework around earthquake prone buildings in Aotearoa New Zealand. These research projects cuts across the traditional disciplines of legal study, engaging with both international and domestic legal frameworks. As such they will provide an insight for non-experts into the growing discipline of disaster law.

The webinar will be recorded and made available following the event.
