Project Manager

GeoHazards International (GHI) seeks to hire a full-time Project Manager. We are a nonprofit organization with the mission to save lives by empowering at-risk communities worldwide to build resilience ahead of disasters and climate impacts. We address earthquakes, landslides, tsunamis, and climate-induced hazards.

​The Project Manager will join our diverse technical team, which includes staff in six countries, and will report to GHI’s Chief Operating Officer. Work is typically virtual, and requires schedule flexibility as well as occasional travel to headquarters and project locations. Salary depends on qualifications, experience, and location. Preferred start is November 2022, but is flexible if needed.

​The human toll per disaster is highest in low- and middle-income countries, which have limited resources to mitigate risk. Women, children, and elders are also disproportionately affected. GeoHazards International’s work aims to close these gaps, so that all people can stay safe when a hazard event strikes. The Project Manager will represent GHI in the U.S. and abroad, and will align with the way we work:

Project Manager Tasks

• ​Manage multiple projects, including schedule, budget, work plan and deliverables
• Lead international project teams, which requires frequent early morning and late evening virtual interaction with colleagues working across multiple time zones
• Develop proposals for new projects, including writing, program design, budgeting, monitoring and evaluation
• Work with staff and project consultants (based in and outside of project country) to design, implement and monitor project activities
• Contribute to technical activities, prepare documents and training materials, conduct field reconnaissance, and assess natural hazards vulnerabilities
• Manage contracts and relationships with funders, consultants, and partners
• Support local staff in cultivating relationships with people/organizations in project communities, including government officials, local professionals, engineers, scientists, academics, masons, educators, and health care professionals
• Ensure that project activities comply with funder requirements and our safety policies
• Prepare quarterly/periodic reports to funding agencies and to GHI’s Board of Trustees
• Maintain project documents and photo documentation of activities
• Participate in other projects in a support or back-up role

Requirements

​Master’s degree related to natural hazards, risk reduction, climate change or development. Preferred fields include: climate science and climate adaptation, hydrology, geotechnical engineering, social science, urban planning, disaster management, and public policy. Other fields considered include: geology, structural or civil engineering, geophysics, seismology, risk communication, social work, education, public health, architecture   

• Strong project management experience, with international experience desirable
• Minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience

Essential Competencies

​Experience working in multidisciplinary, international, and cross-cultural teams

• Excellent written and oral communication skills in English
• Capability to quickly learn outside core technical discipline
• Capacity to manage multiple simultaneously-running projects
• Numerical skills necessary for budget development, tracking, and forecasting
• Proficiency with standard software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Acrobat, Google Earth)
• Capability to collaborate virtually using Google Workspace apps, Zoom, and other apps 

Desirable Skills and Experience

​Hands-on experience establishing relationships with international, national, and local organizations and governments

• Experience living or working in low-income countries
• Problem solving and troubleshooting skills
• Public speaking
• Community organizing and outreach
• A plus: French, Spanish, Haitian Creole, Hindi, Nepali, Dzongkha or regional/local languages of India, Nepal, and Bhutan, with proficiency in speaking, reading and writing
