The position is to be filled as soon as possible, with a contract duration of two years due to programme duration. There are good prospects for an extension. Employment location will be home based, with regular international deployments with a regional priority for Sub-Saharan Africa to reinforce Welthungerhilfe's engagement in delivering effective Anticipatory Humanitarian Action (AHA) programming.

The position is to be filled as soon as possible, with an initial contract period of two years due to the programme duration. There are good prospects for an extension. You are home based, and you are internationally deployable with a regional priority for Sub-Saharan Africa to reinforce Welthungerhilfe's engagement in delivering effective Anticipatory Humanitarian Action (AHA) programming for people at risk of hazards, particularly in working with international NGO and respective local humanitarian NGO partners to strengthen their Anticipatory Humanitarian Action capacities.

As Forecast and Modelling Expert for Anticipatory Humanitarian Action you will be responsible for all actions related the understanding and quantification of hazards as well as the development and application of hazard models, including the identification and application of trigger mechanisms within one of Welthungerhilfe’s strategic programmes. Here you will be member of a Technical Anticipatory Humanitarian Action Team which together with a Programme Management Unit forms an Operational Support Unit for Anticipatory Humanitarian Action within the Humanitarian Directorate of Welthungerhilfe.

Your responsibilities

  • Further develop and localize forecasting and Anticipatory Humanitarian Action methodologies to weather and non-weather-related hazards building on pre-existing Anticipatory Humanitarian Action initiatives as well as wider initiatives around DRR and EW4All.
  • Coordinate the localization and customization of hazard monitoring models.
  • Coordinate and develop conceptualization and implementation of impact-based forecasting approaches, impact mapping as well as risk & vulnerability analyses in regard of anticipatory humanitarian action.
  • Develop and coordinate concept for remote sensing and the use of GIS analyses in anticipatory humanitarian action.
  • Guide Junior Expert(s) with technical focus.
  • Ongoing analysis of global, national and regional methodological approaches and trends in anticipatory humanitarian action.
  • Monitoring of new and existing hazard models and linkage with Welthungerhilfe and programme partners’ crisis monitoring.
  • Coordination and cooperation with scientific institutions on forecasting of hazards as well as on risk and vulnerability analyses
  • Participate in technical working group meetings around hazard analyses in Anticipatory Humanitarian Action.
  • Advocate for changes that are needed within the Anticipatory Humanitarian Action mechanism to accommodate additional hazards.
  • Contribute to the evidence creation around Anticipatory Humanitarian Action.
  • Close contact and exchange as well as intensive coordination with relevant partners who are involved in the methodological development of Anticipatory Humanitarian Action.

Your profile

  • A university degree in a relevant field like disaster risk reduction, disaster risk management, geohazards engineering or similar
  • At least one to three years of professional experience in humanitarian action
  • Experience in modelling and quantification of hazards
  • Experience in the further development and localisation of forecasting and anticipation methods for weather-related and non-weather-related hazards
  • Experience in localising and adapting hazard monitoring models.
  • Experience or knowledge in the development and implementation of impact-based forecasting approaches, impact mapping, and risk and vulnerability analyses.
  • Knowledge of remote sensing concepts and the use of GIS analysis.
  • Willingness to work in countries where Welthungerhilfe or programme partners are implementing or supporting anticipatory humanitarian action projects.
  • Very good knowledge of English. Knowledge of French is an advantage.
