The Global Youth Climate Training is a 13 week course delivered by global experts to ensure that youth feel empowered with the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate the complex technical language of topics discussed at the UNFCCC and gain the confidence and skills to make targeted interventions at COP28. A secondary goal is to build common policy positions across the youth movement to make joined up demands at COP28 and beyond. And last but not least, the third goal is to promote youth-led initiatives that could be replicated at a local level, and impactful organization's that could share their learning experience and best practices.
This program is a collaboration between the Global Youth Coalition (GYC) and Oxford Net Zero (ONZ) and will run fortnightly commencing on May 3rd, on Wednesdays from 4-6pm BST (UK Time). Each session will have interactive activities, featuring a technical lecture delivered by relevant global climate experts, followed by a testimonial by a youth speaker from the climate justice movement. We will have a debrief before Bonn and the final session will be October 30th and will be a debrief of what to expect at COP28!
The curriculum covers the areas of active negotiation at the UNFCCC and was built by consulting leading experts through a survey of 180 young climate justice activists who gave their input on what they most wanted technical training on. Each week we will be covering topics like Climate Justice, Adaptation and Resilience, Climate Finance, Non-state Actors, Climate Policy, Energy, Nature, Gender and Climate Change, Indigenous Rights and Climate Change, Climate Refugees and Climate Migration, Climate Litigation, Negotiations Inside COP28. We will be periodically releasing chapters of a comprehensive book, each accompanied by the outcomes and insights gained from our interactive sessions, in order to share our collective knowledge and progress with a wider audience.
Previous experience in UNFCCC processes or climate discussions is not required! You also do not need to be planning to attend COP28 to apply - these insights are highly transferable to national climate policy! Everyone is welcome from any range of backgrounds. We look forward to receiving your application and welcoming you as a participant in our community of youth climate activists.
All sessions will be recorded, if you can't make a lecture, or are applying from a time zone that makes attendance at the live sessions difficult. A completion certificate will be provided if you are present in at least 70% of the activities.
We are doing our best to fight against the language barrier, the team is trying to make sure that we count with real-time translation for our sessions, if you know any professional that would be willing to support the youth with this inclusion challenge, please contact us.
