New weather-sensing technology created to stop 'preventable' heat-related fatalities in Queensland's elderly

With El Niño expected to deliver a scorching summer to Australia, a team at Griffith University will trial a system to alert the over-65s when temperatures inside their homes becomes dangerous, and provide personalised cooling advice to reduce the health risk.

The trial will involve placing small sensors in three rooms of participants' homes and one outside to monitor the temperature and humidity.

Dr Bach said the potential aim was to create an app that could interact with cheap sensors inside a person's home, that could provide alerts to people in real time.

He said the team hoped the app would then be able to be used across the world, particularly in low- and middle-income countries.
