Interconnected disaster risks 2023
The 2023 Interconnected Disaster Risks report analyses six interconnected risk tipping points, selected for their representation of large global issues, which are changing lives across the world:
- Accelerating extinctions: A chain reaction to ecosystem collapse
- Groundwater depletion: Draining water, risking food supply
- Mountain glaciers melting: Running on thin ice
- Space debris: Losing eyes in the sky
- Unbearable heat: Living in the unliveable
- Uninsurable future: With rising risks, insurance becomes unreachable
The 2023 Interconnected Disaster Risks report also proposes a new framework to classify and discuss the effectiveness of solutions that can help humanity address risk tipping points. The resulting framework has four categories:
- Avoid-Delay
- Avoid-Transform
- Adapt-Delay
- Adapt-Transform
Because risks are interconnected, so are most potential solutions. Therefore, the report highlights overall changes humanity can can make to behaviours and values that would transform the way humanity uses systems and reduces overall risk. Avoiding or adapting to risk tipping points requires fundamental changes to how humanity perceives and values the world in a way that gives the responsibility to care for it.
