Traditional and local knowledge of Eco-DRR on the Sanriku Coast
This book about disaster recovery efforts and projects at the Sanriku Coast constitutes the fourth volume of the series "Eco-DRR as Learned from Local History" and provides a synopsis of the history of the relationship between people and nature at the Sanriku Coast. The stories presented in this volume will contribute to building improved relationships between humans and nature in face of the current serious challenge of climate change and socioeconomic transformation. The series of booklets “Eco-DRR as Learned from Local History” emerged from a desire to trigger a reexamination of how forebearers dealt with both the positive and negative aspects of nature.
The present book comprises four sections: Geography and Land Use of the Sanriku Coast, Recovery and Reconstruction After the Great East Japan Earthquake, Using the Blessings of the Sanriku Coast, and Disaster Preparedness and Handing Down of Related Knowledge. If learning traditional and local knowledge can make people consider the history of the relationship between nature and humans, and contribute—even a little—to building better relationships amid ongoing climate change and socioeconomic changes, the hard work of the many involved with the publication of this series will be rewarded.
