Session on 'Resilient City' at ICLEI World Congress 2012

The number of people affected by climate disasters annually grew to 262 million between 2000 and 2004. In 2010, natural disasters have affected over 15 million people in urban centers in at least 25 countries. In OECD countries 1 in 1,500 people are affected by climate disaster, in developing countries 1 in 19 people are.

Low-risk cities show low vulnerability to climate change, natural and industrial disasters and economic shocks. Climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction planning by all Member local governments will be key to facilitating sustainable communities. In this session, participants will learn about the importance of building resilient to climate change, learn from good practice examples, and discuss in an interactive audience panel discussion how an integrated approach to building resilience can be developed in their cities and municipalities. This session is organized in cooperation with the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR) and the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT).
