Response planning tip sheet for environment, climate change and disaster risk reduction mainstreaming
This tip sheet is developed for use by country-level Shelter Cluster Coordinators to guide them on the minimum requirements for environmental, climate change and Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) mainstreaming in preparation of the Shelter Chapter of Humanitarian Response Plans (HRPs) or Humanitarian Needs and Response Plans (HNRPs). This guidance can also be used for the development of shelter cluster/sector strategies or for response planning that does not follow the Humanitarian Programme Cycle (HPC).
Recommended actions include:
- Develop an environmental and disaster risk map for each result framework activity to guide partners in HNRP/HRP project development.
- Include 2-3 concrete environmental/climate impact mitigation and DRR activities in Shelter Sector objectives and response strategies.
- Adopt greener shelter and NFI (Non-Food Items) specifications (e.g., reducing plastic/packaging, using sustainable materials) in the HRP narrative.
- Develop shelter and NFI specifications to reduce disaster risks (e.g., extra strengthening for high-wind areas) in the HRP narrative.
- Promote options for reducing, reusing, and recycling shelter and NFI materials, including packaging.
