Disaster risk awareness and preparedness of the EU population: Poland
A survey on disaster risk awareness and preparedness in Poland shows that citizens feel most vulnerable to extreme weather events (30%), followed by human health emergencies (25%) and political or geopolitical tensions (25%). Citizens have an average level of disaster awareness and primarily rely on national and local media, as well as family and friends, for information. Although they perceive no difficulties in gathering information, they lag behind the EU average in the preparedness measures they've undertaken, indicating a need for increased efforts to involve them in disaster preparedness. They also demonstrate a slightly lower level of trust in the government and average trust in emergency management agencies regarding disaster response.
This serial survey assesses the awareness of EU citizens about the disaster risks that could affect them, their preparedness to face various disaster risk scenarios, and the reliance they place on a range of actors in disaster situations. The survey also explores the engagement of EU citizens in voluntary work to increase disaster resilience.
