Disaster risk awareness and preparedness of the EU population: Romania
A recent survey on disaster risk awareness and preparedness in Romania reveals that citizens feel most vulnerable to extreme weather events (40%), followed by health emergencies (28%) and floods (24%). Disaster awareness in Romania is lower than the EU average, with citizens mainly relying on media and personal networks for information. Preparedness measures also fall behind the EU average, highlighting a need for increased engagement in disaster readiness efforts. Furthermore, trust in public authorities and emergency management agencies remains low, underscoring the importance of building public confidence in disaster response capabilities.
This serial survey assesses the awareness of EU citizens about the disaster risks that could affect them, their preparedness to face various disaster risk scenarios, and the reliance they place on a range of actors in disaster situations. The survey also explores the engagement of EU citizens in voluntary work to increase disaster resilience.
